Consulting

Today I'm very grateful that I can look back on a career that spans the time from linear tape-based video editing to computer-based non-linear editing and all-photo-chemical motion picture acquisition, color timing and distribution to Digital Intermediate to all-digital image workflows.

A decent understanding of the underlying science and technology not only allowed me to work with more confidence and make my clients trust me, but in early times of digital cinematography and computer-based color grading (early 2000's) there were simply very little to no reliable online platforms, forums or knowledge-bases to inquire.

So I had to dig in to the topics of human vision, image processing, display technologies and calibration myself, reading books, attending workshops, testing and connecting with trustworthy experts in the business. This is the foundation that allowed me to help customers and collaborators to build color grading suites e.g. at Farbkult in Cologne, the Norwegian Filmschool, the HFF Munich, Celluloid VFX in Berlin and others; but also to setup workflows for film productions like Antichrist (2008), the stereoscopic production of DREDD (2012) or eventually to create the curriculum for the first and only long-term, full-time educational program in color grading (2015-2019).

While I continue to share my knowledge and experience in many workshops, I'm also available for hire as consultant for defining image production/post-production workflows, evaluating display devices or training inhouse staff.

For verifying image workflows I strongly believe in the use of test charts and putting them through all encoding and decoding steps that the real footage has to pass through. I've been building my own charts for my purposes for many years and you are welcome to use the ones below or send me an email to get a version as uncompressed 10bit DPX file with a short guide as PDF.

After 11 years I finally granted "my test chart" a complete overhaul and got myself into DCTL coding. Well, just enough to craft a version of my chart, that allows for resolution independence and a couple of user adjustable features. I'm happy to share it free of charge, but simply out of curiosity I'd like you to send me a short email if your interested in having it.
